Heartbreaking photos of troops on the eve of the Somme 100 years ago
Photographs taken before the Battle of the Somme provide a glimpse into soldier life in the months preceding the cataclysmic struggle that began 100 years ago this week. The Daily Mail colourized several of these wartime images and – where possible – indicated the fate of individual soldiers during the 4.5 month battle.
